I started to install my hotcams, and I have a question. What instructions do you use to line up the timing marks.
In the owners manual it said to have 15 chain links from the top mark on the intake sprocket to the top mark on the exhaust sprocket. When I did that the marks on the intake cam were not paralel with the top of the head.
When I lined them up with hotcams instructions (both marks paralel to the head) There is only 14 links between the top marks on the cam sprockets.

Which one of these are right?

U have a nut that cover a hole on the crank on the left side of the bike ... Turn wheel until the line is on the center of the hole ... Now use cams mark and line them with the head .... Taht what i did ...

First, make absolutely SURE your piston is at Top Dead Center on the Compression stroke. Make sure it's not TDC on the exhaust stroke.

At TDC on the compressions stroke, the lobes, when viewed from the left side of the motor, will look like this:

Make sure the cam lobes are pointed up and away from each other, and the marks on the engine case are lined up at the TDC mark. With the lobes like this, you're TDC on the compression stroke. (Sorry to insult if you already have this part wired).

Then, the marks on your cams should look exactly like this, when viewed from the right side of the motor:

They need to be flush with the top of the head.

Thanks for the replies. I have it setup like the pics above. I wanted to make sure this was right, because there are only 14 links on the chain between the marks and the manual said there should be 15.

WHEN I INSTALLED MY HOTCAMS IS SAID TO ALIGHN THE T UP THROUGH A HOLE IN THE CRANK CASE. THIS HAS TO BE TDC BECAUSE THERE IS ONLY ONE PISTON.

I left the stock one in.

Yes, I had to replace both exhaust shims.

Its broke in now, and I just changed the oil. There is a nice gain at higher rpm's.

You have TDC in two different positions, my good man. Since it's a four stroke, you'll be at TDC on the compression stroke, and TDC on the exhaust stroke.

Here's what the cam lobes look like at TDC on the compression stroke (notice the camshaft lobes pointed up and away from each other):

Now, The pic below shows what the cam lobes look like when the piston is at TDC on the exhaust stoke. Notice that the lobes are pointed down and towards each other.

Clearly, there are two different TDCs in a four stroke motor...

Does it only spark on 1 stroke? If not it wouldnt make any difference which stroke you set it up on, right?

it is setup so it sparks on the compresion stroke .000001 before the piston reaches top center so when it sparks it sparks exactly when the piston reacehs TDC, its not exactly .000001 but ya ge tthe point

It only sparks on the compression stroke - no need for it to spark on the exhaust stroke (that's when the piston is pushing out the exhaust gas - no spark there).
