so im installing a 434 kit with 12:1 compression, im a big guy and am wanting a lot of bottom end power, do you guys think stock cams will be ok, or will they be choking my bike, i found a set of stage 1 hotcams for 240 but dont know if theyre worth the difference, thanks

At 434cc's even the stage 1 hot cams will be holding you back. I would go with some old style hot cams if you can find them. Or you can go larger, but you may start losing some low end.

Am i reading these numbers correct. Is the factory 05 and up exhaust cam a bigger cam than most aftermarket cams? as in If i am an 03 I could buy a good Web intake cam and a factory 05-up exhaust cam and be pretty good?

The numbers for the factory cams, I believe, are at 0.040" Web duration ratings are at 0.050" which makes them appear smaller than they are compared to a cam that's measured at 0.040"

So, that said, yes the stock exhaust cam is pretty decent size, but no it's not quite as big as it seems, and from my experience, aftermarket cams have always made the best power as a pair like they belong. The other thing that we don't know is the LCL of the stock cams. If someone would measure a stock cam @ 0.050" and record the LCL, I believe it would become clear why this is.

Not only that, but stock cam velocities are not as fast as aftermarket, so even though it's decent size, the air flow isn't comparable. That may be the biggest reason.

Thanks Man. I knew that there had to be more to the story then just those numbers. I truly appreciate the help and advice before I went and did something that I would have regretted.

Maybe you guys can lend a hand I know there are many many variable to cam set ups but let me throw this out there. I am rebuilding my 13 yr olds Z. We do alot of trail riding and playing in the sand. Low to mid range stuff. I am presently have his cylinder machined. Just a clean up on the ports and the seats cut, and base checked. No real porting. I have opted to go with the Wiseco 12.2:1 forged piston and standard replacement Kibble White Black Diamond valves, guides, and seals, Wiseco 4/5 cam chain, and adding a Curtis Sparks head pipe to the Big Gun slip on he has now. The front sprocket is now 13 tooth and the rear is stock. I am up in the air as to what cams to go with. (Stage 1 Hot cams, Web, Mega, Yoshi????) Im really just looking to build a strong reliable Z. I thought about going with the FCR39 but I think thats just gonna be too much snap for now. We'll get there. Let him get used to this mod first. I went with the Pro Design Pro flow filter set up and am also in need of suggestion on the carb to air box boot I should go with. (No half assed rigs please I'll buy the right parts) The other thing is I have choosen to go with new stock valve springs because Ive heard the aftermarket are too stiff for what Im doing and they are only necessary when adding more HP than what Im doing and will actually make the motor work too hard right now. Please hit me with your feed back. Any and all is appreciate and money is not an issue I want this bike built right. I will of course jet accordingly after all is installed. Thx in advance JIM PS I may add a R&D power bowl and boyseen quick start kit to the carb if anyone thinks thats a good idea.
