LTR450, TRX450, and 05 and up LTZ. LTR's and TRX's can be found cheap on eBay. LTZ's, you'll have to look around for a good deal.

The 03-04 shocks do suck from what I hear. Your best bet for a direct replacement, cheap upgrade would be to switch to the 05-08 shocks with reservoirs. If you ever decide you want something even better, get them revalved/resprung by a place called GT Thunder. You'll then have a shock that some say compares to the expensive aftermarket shocks. Not talking from experience, just repeating what I've heard.

For around 220 you can pick up a brand new set of take offs from a trx450r and a 400ex rear spring to replace the spring on you stock rear shock. This is what I have and is a drastic improvement for cheap.

Its not the 400ex shock, its the spring from the 400ex shock put onto the z400 shock body.

you would need a spring compressor to pull the z spring off and put the 400ex spring onto the shock body..im thinking about doing this myself along with a set of 05+ fronts..i just havent found a good deal yet

Ive read that you only need a spring compressor to remove the front shock springs, and to remove the rear you just adjust the preload out all the way and you will be able to remove the rear spring without a compressor. Im not for sure but thats what I have read on here somewhere. I will go take a look at my manual later on and see what it says.

I have seen some LTR shocks go for as little as $100. If you have +2 or +3 a-arms it might be your best bet for a cheap upgrade.

I there, for the rear it's better to replace the entire rear shock or just the spring from the trx 400. I think if the spring is better, the valving should be better also??'
