Z400 crank no start *help*

Just bought an 06 z400. It would crank and not start cold. Could pull start and it would fire right up. It had one intake valve that was outta spec so I sent it to the local quad shop, had them install new valves and shim it to spec. Put new head on, new head gasket. Set timing number 1 on exhaust pointing forward, 2 up and 3 on intake valve up. Cranks but still wont start. Has spark, has fuel. Would the decompression mechanism on exhaust cam be the problem? How should it function? Anyone have any ideas? Ive been inside motors before and rebuilt a few bikes, but this one has me stumped! Gonna try charging battery and using starting fluid...

Double check the valve lash. If they set the lash on the bench it may be worth checking. As for the timing....there are marks on the sprockets that should line up with the top of the head.
Sounds like you have the timing right. Is there 15 pins between timing (arrows) marks?

Yes, 15 in between number 2 on exhaust and number 3 on intake. Will Check valves again. On my timing with crank at tdc and line next to the T set on the pointer im half a tooth off both ways from being 100% parallel with the #1 on exhaust cam. Will one tooth make the difference? If so do i go advanced or retarded on my timing? Do i run the pointer directly on the T or on the line next to it? Thanks

On the line next to the T.
The arrows pointing to the sides on the cam sprockets should be lining up with the top surface of the head.....and they will not be perfect.

Got it goin last night. Rechecked timing it was fine, put new fuel in tank , charged battery and hooked up the vaccuum line from petcock to tank. Gave small squirt of starting fluid and it primed itself and fired right up! Thanks all
