Default Oil and Oil filter recommendations on a 2006 z400.. 0 degree thru 90 degree weather.

I am looking for some engine oil and oil filter suggestions for a 2006 z400. I live in the northeast so the temperatures get down to 0 degrees in the winter and up to 100 degrees in the summer... not sure if there is one type of oil that is good for both winter riding and summer riding?

also.. should I go fully synthetic or regular mix oil?

I just bought this bike used so I don't know what kind of oil is already in the bike.

Thank You

Amsoil 0w 40 synthetic. It's going to have to be a synthetic of you only want to run one oil.

okay.. well being that I do NOT know what is currently in the bike... I bought it used so god knows what was in it... assuming it's CONVENTIONAL oil in the bike.. is there any problem switching to a synthetic? anything in particular I need to do different than the owners manual says in terms of changing the oil?

and what oil filters do you recommend?

best/cheapest place to buy this stuff?

Everyone will always have a difference of opinions when it comes to oil and filters. Personally, I run Yamalube synthetic 0w40 in all my quads. I've never had an oiling issue ever with my toys. As for filters, I run OEM. They are always in stock, and my dealer is just down the street from me.

Just make sure you check your levels often and replace based on your riding style.

It doesn't matter what's in the bike now. Any horror stories you've heard about synthetic oil mixed with conventional oil are wives tales. I'm not saying that you should run half and half or anything, but you can go back and fourth all you want, and you'll never have a problem.

The procedure in the owner's manual will be fine. Personally I like to do my final oil check with the engine hot (like after riding at least 15 min)

Yep, that's the stuff. There are probably local dealers in your area that carry it. It's not cheap oil, but it's really good oil, and it can handle both temp extremes that you will see. I have about the same temp variance here in Minnesota.

As far as filters go, I have used stock, emgo, and K&N and I can't tell any real difference. Emgo seem to be the cheapest, and Advantage cycle sells them in 6 packs. Make sure you change the oil frequently. If your engine is modified, you should change it more frequently than what the service manual says.

Also, don't forget the air filter. It needs to be cleaned and oiled way more often than the oil get's changed depending on your riding conditions. Fail at this and you will take out the intake valves, not to mention wear on the other parts.

sounds good!

yeah I have a K&N air filter with the dust cover over the filter... I just cleaned it with the K&N Recharge cleaner and oil... then I put the K&N grease on the edge of the filter... so there is a lot of 'grease' now on there to keep it air tight.

I ordered a bunch of OEM oil filters..

I am just having a real pain in the butt time finding this Amsoil oil... does anybody sell it online and ship it to your door? it seems that people do NOT want to ship this stuff

I run Rotella 5w-40 full synthetic.. It's cheap, and it works well.. I have also used Mobil 1 4T 10w-40 motorcycle oil, and amsoil. Both are great oils! I always pick up a $6 k&n filter.. Whenever I use the one I have lying around, I buy another one so I'll always be ready for an oil change
