Update: Took the day off work to enjoy the warm weather.
Threw the new starter and solenoid in, and boom started right up. I had sent the old starter out to a very reputable rebuild shop, and they said there was nothing wrong with it. Not sure if it was just the solenoid, but now it's got both a new starter and used solenoid. May just order an extra solenoid to keep on hand.

I had a 400ex starter once that had cracked the insulating disc inside the starter between the case and the positve terminal. I beleive the Z is set up the same way. It cracked due to me overtightening the positive terminal. Anyways it acted the exact same way until the positive termainal bolt fully contacted the case, then it blew a fuse and started smoking. That made me see what the problem was. Took it apart and added a new insulation disc and worked fine from then on out. Just throughing out a possibility
