Question Bog at WOT

Hey guys. First off I know there is a search button and I've used it, just haven't had a direct answer for what I'm looking for. So I want to ask and hope to get an easy reply.

got a 2004 ltz400 of course.. Just put a Pro C T4 pipe setup on it and been reading by most people that they are putting around a 160 main jet in. So I got a 155, 160, and 167 from the store to try out the difference.

Now before we pulled the carb apart the quad is running VERY strong. put a 13 tooth front sprocket on it and its awesome! Now other then I feel like i'm hitting the revlimit a little early the quad is running good (that normal?). The carb has a 130 main in it. Seems small from what everyone post they are running but the way the quad runs I can't seem to understand why I should change it. But we put the 160 in anyway thinking we should try it. now it idles find and starts off fine, but when i hit the gas hard it seems to bog bad. I'm sure there is some answer already on here to what my problem is but me being someone who has NEVER messed with a carb before I'm a little overwhelmed with all the different things to adjust.

I live in Michigan, and am about 900ft above sea level from what Google tells me.

any help that isn't "refer to the search button" would be great lol

Thanks guys!

oh, stock air box and filter for now. going to be topless with uni filter and pre-filter soon, but thats not in the equation at the moment.

I think you might be running a little rich there Derek. I would maybe try the 150 main jet since you have done nothing to your intake system. I believe I'm running a 160 main, but I have no air box,fci intake,k&n, and full exhaust.

ya, I just haven't gone out and bought the new filter setup or taken the top off and modded it. And I plan on running a 400ex pipe since everyone seems to talk well about it and its a cheap mod. But a 150 might work? I'm trying to understand what people mean for the 3rd spot or 1st spot for the needle and what not, but its late and i'm tired lol.

I would say 2 turns out and clip on the third slot of needle. I forget if the stock needle has an adjustable needle or not lol! Try that and see if it stops the bogging out at wot. Sputtering and popping usually means lean condition, while bogging mid to top wot means a rich condition

I just jetted mine last night. I could be wrong, my 1st time messing with a carb to, but the stock needle did not appear adjustable. maybe it could be spaced with a washer. I know the dynojet needle is grooved/slotted and thats what everyone means.

Carb tuning can be a headache if you don't understand whas happening and where in the carb. Here are some intresting Links I came up with that I suggest reading through first...
The Secret World Of The Fuel Screw

Jetting Database

The last one is the resulrs from typing "Carb tuning" into the search function

You really need to take that air box lid off for the higher main jet to be effective. If your concerned about crap getting in there you can put a K$N power lid on it. With that exhaust you will need to bump the pilot jet up by one as well. If you leave that lid on, your better off leaving the jetting as it was because its not getting enough air to correctly mix with the increased fuel from the higher jets. You won't feel the potential from your new exhaust until the carb is jetted and the engine can breath better.

Ya, I plan on going to the local shop this weekend to get a better air filter and prefilter. I plan on taking the air box top off, just haven't yet. I don't want to say I was trying to save any money by not buying the dynojet jet kit, but I guess since I know very little about carbs I didn't understand the importance of what came in it, such as an adjustable needle and what not. Tomorrow I should have a new clean air filter on her with no lid on, and I'll try bumping up again to the 155 to start and bump up the other one 1 step as well and see where that gets me. My buddy did all the work last time so I haven't really been hands on, but there's no time like the present to learn! I'll probably get a better understanding of what all this talk is to, once I touch as see everything with my own eyes.

Thanks for the fast reply's. Always great having a fast support team!

The dynojet stage 2 kit has a different taper and clip adjustments on it.I have an 07, so it,s a bit different from yours..I have the lid off and full exhaust. Followed their instructions. It runs perfect from idle to wot. The instructions are on their web site..
Here they are for an 03-04..

When you guys run that powerlid do you really need the outerwear filter over top ur regular filter still? I don't think it would be a bad thing, but its another step for the air to make it through which means a restriction. I would think you would still want to use it, but figured I'd ask what others do
