threw my chain now wont shift into first

I was riding the other day and the chain slipped off I put the chain back on and now wont shift into first but shifts into second and third and so on. Didn't break the case or anything just not shifting Not really sure what the problem could be. what might be the problem? and some diagrams of what the problem might be would be great

Did it bend the shifter shaft not allowing it to shift into first properly?

i don't know if this is bad or not but i can rock the shaft in and out by pulling on it a little by the shift lever

I just went out to the garage and tried that on all three of ours. They all move a little....mine more then the two '04's. Mine might move 3/16"....maybe a 1/4". The other two might be half that.

it doesn't shift into reverse or neutral. I drained the oil to see if there was metal in it and its all clean and clear. so i'm guessing its a fork or the shaft. thanks for the input everyone

Did you throw the chain in 1st? I don't know enough about the way these things are geared and such but is it possible to torch a single gear that bad that it won't even shift to it??

If so.. 1st gear gone.. Reverse might still be there seeing as you can't even get to it to give it a try?

Someone correct me

I am clueless when it comes to transmissions and gearing stuff. I know from the piston up....

yeah it went in first gear and it will shift 2nd - 5th with no problem i tried reverse and it rocks just like in neutral
