Default Dyna on order... Springs ???

So you guys have been very helpful in my last post so I'll sum up for those who don't know and ask my question

I just put the full T4 exhaust on, 13t sprocket, k&n with that plate, no air box top, jetted at 155, adjusted the fuel screw and the quad is running really strong. I feel like i'm getting to my rev limiter a little faster then I'd like so I was told to get a dyna box and get that bost from it for another 1,000 or so rpms. so I ordered it...

Here's the quetion. At the end of that post someone mentioned that I need new valve springs... How important is this to do right away? Its not that I'm not willing to put the money into it to make sure things are right, but is this something where I should put the box on and run it for a while, and when I knowtice a problem go ahead and do the springs... or is this something I should do very soon? I'd rather not jump that deep in the motor for a little while. Kind of just want to ride the thing. But I'll defer to the experts lol... worse case I guess I can wait on installing the box when I get it, till i'm ready to do the springs.

Is there anything else I'm missing that I need to do or just change the oil and put gas in the dang thing and have a blast!?!?!

As always thanks for the info gentlemen...

and remember... don't be a squid, wear your lid!

I had a dyna on mine for a few months before my valves cupped. It was a combination of poor filtration, and a higher than stock rev limit on stock valves. The stock ltz valves can't handle the rpm's that the dyna allows. If you've never done your valves, you could always just wait until they cup before you change the springs. If you have replaced your valves recently, save them and upgrade the springs.

The reason you should change your valves is because the stock valves are a two piece design and can break at high RPM's. And changing the springs to some stiffer ones is to keep your valves from floating at those higher RPM's. Do you need to do it now? Your call, but I would. I wouldn't risk pushing it (especially the valves). There are people here that are running stock valves and springs with the Dyna and have no problems. But some will say its Russian roulette.

got this quad just over a month ago from a really good craigslist trade for an old c10 i had needing a restore. needless to say i'm VERY happy with my trade. I just get the bug to mod the heck out of it right when I get them. I don't enjoy leaving things stock for long... hence the way my crotch rocket is lol.

So if I wait and just let the stock boys wear out i'll need to put new springs and valves in? And if I do it now i'll just need springs? I'm not very good at motors, but reading a lot and getting my learn on. Sometimes the search feature just doesn't give you the exact answer your looking for.

Thanks again for info

I'd change the valve springs, from my experience with my valves.

While you're in there, i'd upgrade the valves, this way you're in there once! You may as well do the timing chain while you're there, and throw on a drze base gasket.

i understand the upgrade all that while i'm in there, but that's just more and more money lol.. with how much I've put into the quad and work being slow I'd almost rather send back the box then buy all that stuff you've said to do lol... we shall see though... ty for the input

No prob.. the drz-e gasket is only a few bucks. Changing the valves is just preventative maintenance, they've gone bad on most of us already, and changing the springs is necessary to operate at higher rpms than stock.

As long as you're careful not to be bouncing off the rev limiter, you may be able to run what you have for a while.

Good luck!

i'm not the type that sits on the rev limiter, but we all find it once and a while

I hear ya, I wasn't either. Just the occasional drag and wot in 5th. I remember pulling past my friend on his z in 5th b/c of that extra 1k rpm and thinking to myself.... this can't be good for my z lol.

is it possible that with all the carb stuff i've been doing would the idea of the rev limiter be just a higher spot of the wot bogging? My buddy says i'm crazy, but I still feel like it had just as much power if not more when I had the 130 jet in the carb instead of the now 155 and fuel screw adjusted...

Not sure what you mean, but how does your plug look?

ok, when i put the pipe on and rode it i loved it, when i put the -1 front sprocket on i loved it, when I jetted it and got it running as smooth as possible i "liked it a lot"

with the stock 130 jet it ran VERY well... but as I added the k&n and took the air box top off i knew I'd need more fuel so we after talking to people and reading a lot on here everyone said 150-160 seemed to be about normal for a 900 foot above sea level setup... right now i have a 155 in it and it runs great! but seems to hit that rev limiter a little to fast.. making me wonder if maybe its not the rev limiter but the motor hesitating a little at the top. It didn't do that with the 130... So do I go back to a 130, or try the 145 or 150 i have is what i'm trying to decide... I'd use the fact that its cold out, but even with it cold that 130 setup ran GREAT!!!! as for the plug, i will look at it tomorrow and see if its wet or to dry. should have free time to play with it. plus she needs a bath

See what your plug looks like, if it's wet/black, you're too rich. If you want to try dropping it a jet size, go for it, but if it starts popping on decel, you're too lean.

You should be close with that 155. What pilot jet BTW? That 13 tooth will get you to the rev limit faster. Maybe mess with your needle?

Pilot jet is stock whatever it is.. idles really well. Starts really well.. I know the 13 tooth will get me there faster, but I did ride it around with the 13 while i still had the 130 in and now riding it around with the 155 and fuel screw done and it seems to hit way sooner... All that being said.. its Feb in michigan, and has been 40+ degrees out, so the ground is wet and hard to get traction so lots of wheel spin. Which i understand means the motor winds up faster... so we will see.. Its possible i might go riding at a local ORV park with in the next week which will be best so I can really open it up in all the gears and see how it runs both accelerating and decelerating...
