Default What are you guys paying for Powder Coating??

I'm looking to get my frame, sub frame, and a arms PC'd. I am getting ready to replace all my plastics, so figured a nice winter project would be a frame down tear down, look for any issues(bends, breaks, cracks, etc..). Then I had the thought to PC everything. I have 3 coaters in pretty close proximity. The one(which is a good friend of one of my friends) told me $500, then he said $425. He said they put the parts in the oven to break down the paint, then grit blast the parts, then PC them, then bake again.

Now I am no expert on the subject, but $425 sounds a bit pricey. I am just trying to get a nationwide gauge as to what you guys are spending around the country for the same thing. I'd like to be able to wheel and deal if needed.

The most expensive I've gotten was 500. Burn off, blast, prime, coat, clear. I'm getting silver vein main frame and black subframe red arms and swing arm

$500 is nucking futs!!it cost me 265 to do everything on my quad. and the red is a two coat process. What colors are you trying to do? you might be better off taking everything down to bare metal yourself.

I paid $200 for an lt250r frame... includes prep, blasting and powder

I also brought boxes of other parts to do as well.... i find that I always make out better bringing more parts and swing a cash deal!

I wanted black. Not sure if I wanted matte, satin, or gloss, but I told him that. It's not like I wanted gold flake or something.

So we think $425 is high?

My local PC guy usually is pretty fair on prices. When I rebuilt mine I did the frame, subframe, a arms, axle, nerfs, bumper, grab bar and hubs and it was about $450. I thought that was pretty fair to blast, prep, mask off all bolt holes and PC everything. However I do plan on building my own setup. I figure I can build an oven for less than $500.

Also, in regards to PCing the springs.
1.) how hard is it to get them off the shock?
2.) does the heat used to bake them after the coating is applied weaken the springs?

Speaking of powder coating....I'm pulling the trigger on a harbor freight kit along with their oven. It's 18x18x18 internal dimensions. It's $499. I'm on the fence about doing the frame right now. If I do then I gotta buy new plastics for it to match. So let's see...
Ti valves $400
Oven $500
Pc frame $300
Plastics $500
=$1700 that I don't wanna spend at one time...not to mention what I've spent this week on piston, gaskets and misc items. So I'm gonna pc the a arms, head, cylinder, side covers and other misc items for now. Then maybe in a month or two ill tear it back down and do the frame and plastics. I hate my bike being down! I'm used to just being able to walk out to my shop and press the button and listen to him lope.

I have a HF by me, never noticed them having an oven. Might have to take a long lunch today.

Going with the spirit of cheapness Why not just find an old electric oven on Craigslist? It would have about the same internal dims as the HF unit and if you find one can usually be had for FREE to $200 or so....plus if the stove top works you can cook rice and gravy while your parts bake.

I found one for $100 yesterday. So I told the ole lady what I was planning. She wasn't having any of it. She doesn't want an oven on the back patio. I live in a highly restricted neighborhood too and the neighbors look for stuff to complain about. As far as my shop....I have a 12x16 (biggest allowed in the neighborhood) shop detached from my house. And I have a 10x22 boat port. Both of which are filled up with stuff and I have no room for an oven. The harbor freight oven with fit on the counter in my shop and look nicer.
This is my boat port...so you get an idea

This shows inside my shops space at a premium

And this is my shop

O and an oven is 220...whereas the hf oven is 110 and pulls 13 amps. Plus it looks better. I guess I can understand my wife not wanting the patio to look like Sanford and Son
