Default Powder Coating Winter Project

Well after much talk, thought, and second, triple, and quadruple guessing myself, I bit the bullet and decided to start stripping her down today. I want to first start off by saying thank you to KFXGUY, decentZ89, chrisroberts916, Spize, and everyone else who contributed feedback, helpful hints, and opinions to me through out this project.

So far I have the subframe off, the front shocks off, and other miscellaneous parts. Had to take a break as I was losing track of time and hungrier than a P.O.W. Here are some in progress pics so far. I've been putting all the nuts, bolts, and various other items in labeled zip locks as I go to ensure I don't lose anything and get it all back together. If anyone has any suggestions or tips for the work I have left to go, please speak up.

@Decent- Not sure just yet. I bought the Maier black carbon fiber plastics, so I was thinking black. Not sure if I should go matte, satin, or gloss. Thoughts? I heard gloss shows every imperfection, blemish, hand print, splatter, etc..

@Spize- Best $28 I have ever spent. As you can see I only have a 1 car garage, those things are life savers. EVERYONE should buy them. The jack is HF too, a friend works there, that was $199 and I think I paid $109 or $119 with the discount.

1) First bit of advice I can give you is don't be afraid of any off it. Man put it together, so should you able to.

2) When I sent my frame and sub frame out to powder coat, I went to the hardware store and bought 20 6x1.5, 18 8x1.5 and 8 8x1.25 bolts and filled all threaded holes. It cost about $12 but now I have nice white bolts and clean threads.

3) While your doing it keep a good eye out for the deals. Now is the time to put in that large oil tank BEFORE the radiator goes in. If you find the right deals you can sell your stock stuff to make some up.

4) You been around long enough to see all the upgrades on the cheap. ie YFZ brakes, Polaris brake lines, Honda carb and tube and so on. Take advantage of all the information on this site.

5) Ask if your not sure, but make your own decisions.

6) Take your time and a lot of pictures of how every thing is mounted and routed when removing and refer back to them when you reassemble.

Good Luck

Thanks Chris, I pretty much feel the exact same except I never thought about the bolts. That's a great idea for both reasons, and I am 100% doing that. I didn't take to many pics as I think for the most part it all kinda fits one way. I do have both the service manual and the parts manual(both are printed and in page protectors so no greasy hand prints for me), so I should be good there. I have been taking extra time to make sure I put everything in zip locks and labeled them extremely accurately.

This is the progress so far:

I did have one f-ck up so far, while trying to unplug the indicator lights, this happened. Anyone run into this before if so, how the hell do I reinstall the male end of the plug? And while I am at this stage, should I add like a 4" or 5" extension in there so its not so tight?

I'm going to start my built thread shortly. So we will be doing it at the same time. I have a couple color suggestions for you. Try a candy orange or candy blue on the frame. I'm doing my frame and subframe candy lime green. I already have a fabricated oil tank waiting to go in. I polished it an clear coated it. Now I gotta strip it. Lol. I'm gonna clear powder it. A arms are gonna be chrome powder coat. Be looking for my thread to. And good luck!

I am all over the place on colors. As I've said on here various times, I bought the Maiers carbon fiber plastics so whatever I do has to compliment them. Most of my riding gear is white, black, or white/black and with the plastics being dark I thought I'd get a white decal set to balance out all the dark colors. Initially I was set on a black frame(matte, satin, or gloss wasnt sure which), then I thought about white to offset the dark. Then I thought gunmetal, then silver, then I don't know what. I am thinking black or white now. I am open to suggestions.

Harbor Frieght, I told them I knew Spize, got 95% off. They are usually $7.99 a piece I think, wait for the sales flyer and they'll be $5.99 I think which if memory serves me correct is what I paid. I can tell you they are the best thing you'll ever buy, you don't realize how often you use them.

I love the look of my o8 limited edition. Black plastics and a candy red frame I plan on pc'n my frame guards arms and oil tank siler vein. Bumper and grab bar black just to give you an idea of colors. I seen one with a flat burnt orange frame and amother with a candy purple both sick.
