It's not necessary to replace the tensioner. Just make sure you reset it and torque it properly.

hey my 04 z400 got to the point it was hard to start cold and was ticking so i put a new did timing chain in it, now that i put it back together i only have 30psi. compression i check the timing 6times its right. do you think i may just need to shim my valves or do they need replaced? oh and before i did the timing chain the intake valves where still in clearence at like 15mm? thanks

15mm would be way out of spec, I think you forgot a decimal point. If your valves are in spec, and your compression is low, you may have a bent valve, or you may not have got the cam timing right, which hopefully doesn't result in a bent valve.

However, if your valves ever lose clearance to the point of more than a couple thousandths of an inch, they need replaced. Say for example you find you have zero valve clearance on an intake valve, re-shimming might last you a day and clearance will be lost again. If you ever find one at zero, it needs replaced.

im about to tear into mine tomorrow i think to check it out because it was hard to start cold but once you got it started ran great. so i put a timing chain in it thinking that might be my problem. i know i timed it right but only 30 to 40psi on the comp. tester.. so tomorrow i guees ill see if its valves or not

I recently rebuilt the carb on my z400. Now its really hard to start cold and it won't start at all if its choked. After it starts and warms up it will idle great and run great until you try to open it up then it starts spitting and sputtering and won't open up much at all...any idea what might be the problem?

alright well i tore my down and had a stuck ring.. so new piston and rings put it back together.. mind you i check my valves before tear down they were all in spec.. put the motor back together and the intake valve is actually hold one of the intake valves open and the other only has .05mm but both exhaust are fine.. any idea what happened here?

Did you switch the buckets? Also after everything is torqued to spec., spin the motor over a few times before you check the valves.

i spun everthing over and had like 30psi should have atleast 90-100psi with the new piston unseated so i took the shims out of the intake side so it would hold the valve open and i got 100psi.. but had a .40mm gap on both intakes.. so should i just reshim it? because the intake was in clearance before i took the head off.. i had the buckets off but didnt switch them..
