Default piston rod

My rod has side to side wiggle but when it was running I didn't here knocking or chattering. I know on a car rode there is no side to side wiggle. Is this normal?

Yes, the rod is aloud to have a slight bit of side to side wiggle, as it will expand and stay centered on the bearing/crank. It's up and down motion that's not okay.

Cool man! Good luck to you on your rebuild. I was going to get one of those Tusk honing kits to hone my own cylinder with a drill.. That way I could use it on future machines as well. That side to side motion on the rod is completely normal. I just put a new wiseco crank and rod in my YZ125 and it had a little side to side play in it.

auto engines will have solid bearings, or commonly what is called a bushing. these will have almost no play to be felt, a few thousandths of clearance is all they get. even when worn, they will feel much tighter than the ball or needle bearings found in the suzuki engine. roller bearings are great but the side play becomes excessive with the slightest amount of wear.

get a service manual, it has all the allowable play/clearances/specs in it including rod bearing play.

I literally just finished a rebuild on a mercedes 272 6 cylinder. I was surprised to see that the side to side play on the rods w/ new bearings was very noticeable. So noticeable, I had the regional specialist come down to take a look. Completely normal! Just like atv4life said, side to side play is ok, up and down is no good at all.
