I am new on here and looking for advice on if i should buy a quad.
It is a 2004 z400 It has a Brand new motor and tranny. 12:1 piston, regeared for racing, new carb, full alba exhaust system, k&n intake system, brand new hole shot tires. This is what the guy says, i know him and think i trust him but dont know enough about all this to decide. He says it needs a new axle shaft and a new rim and it will be ready to go. I have seen pictures of it and can go look at it but have not yet. He wants $1000 for it. It seems like a sweet deal but i dont know how the axle swap would be. I am bright enough to figure out the basic stuff. So if i could get some advice if that is a big process or doable. Someone let me know from the info i have. Thanks.. |

define "new" motor...is it just a new piston and rings or actually all new cylinder/cams/piston etc?...and define a "new" lower end? is everything new or just a new crank? or maybe a new clutch? ...swapping out for a new axle isnt to bad, but is thier more damage there than just the axle?..is the swingarm cracked?..are the axle bearings cooked?..what caused the axle to get bent in the first place?....lot of things to check on the quad including to see if the frame is bent.....1000 seems great but their could be a lot of underlying problems on it.....take someone with you that knows quads very very well and look it over...my 2 cents |

He says he can still ride it its just a rough ride. Ill take someone with me to check it out. Thanks, I didnt think about the frame, bearings, etc.

id go look it over if its not to far away and take a boatload of pics from every angle and post them on here...... again 1000 seems like a great deal but something tells me their is more to it than what he is saying....its not always the case but i just dont want to see you get taken... or wind up with a money pit

Yeah I agree "Brand New" is a pretty loose term, unless he has receipts and such to prove the cases were split and the motor was taken COMPLETELY apart and gone through (or if he is an experienced mechanic himself) it is tough to say a 2004 motor is brand new, but he does say "new trans" so maybe that is the case. Either way rolling one hard enough to bend the axle usually tweaks other stuff too so get some detailed pics or try take someone you know and trust to look it over carefully. $1000 is great deal if its just the axle, but is it needs $2000 worth of work and chassis parts, not such a great deal.....

The worst could be a bent frame or a trashed rear end. But in my opinion I would do it because if the engine work was actually done, it's worth that in parts.
