Default 8" Rears

Hi guys,
I've used the search function but can't find what i need.
1. Does anyone run 8" rears like the LTR ?
2. Does it make much difference on the track ?
I know it will lower the rear but on the tracks here it won't make a clearance issue, it will also change the gearing ratio, that i know but having ridden the LTR with both 9" and 8" rears there is a marked difference between them.

Just a thought.

It is the preferred size for MX. You will find most everyone racing MX using 8" rears and it does make a difference.
I would however not recommend 8" for XC racing or trail riding because of the loss of clearance.

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure that wheel size has nothing to do with ground clearance or gearing. Ultimately it is the tire that you put on the wheel. A 20" is a 20" no matter if it's on a 10" wheel or an 8" wheel. There's just more sidewall on the 8" wheel.

+1 it makes sense..i put 35" tires on my jeep on a 15 inch rim. changed my gearing to 4.10 and it made a difference..if i had 35" tires on a 17" rim it would make not an ounce of difference..that is unless the weight difference of the rim was big..then it would make sense for the rotational mass and unsprung weight but as far as changing from an 8 to a 9 or 10 as long as the tire diameter is the same it wont affect your gearing in any way

That is the only reason I have 8's. Less weight.

I run a 18" tire in the rear on dirt. What I noticed with the gearing is that with the 18" tire and 14/40 gearing is was very close to what it was like with stock rear tires and 13/40 gearing. Good acceleration and good power. But with the 18" tires it did lower it a hair and I like the feel and look of it. Thought I also do not really need to worry about clearance too much.

I have thought I've seen somewhere if you run the 18's on 8 inch rims you have less chance of bending your beads as if you ran 9 inch wheels with 18's. More sidewall a little more cushion.
