Red face Need Engine Help!!!

Well I purchased my first Suzuki ever today and wow! It is an 03 z 400. Got it real cheap (1,000) cause guy couldnt get it running. well after tinkering got it to run but!!! It run like chit. would only run at a fast Idle give it gas and it would backfire (sounded a lot like a 12ga.) every once in a while it would clear out and run decent. Finally it backfired so bad it blew the carb clean out of the boot!!! When it did that it also decided to shear all the bolts out of the starter clutch and destroy my stator. KNEW I SHOULD HAVE STUCK WITH THE RED ONE!!! Please help I dont even know where to start! Ohh yeah it has a Hot Rods 430 Stroker kit, Full yosh, pro-flow adapter,159 main, and the head is ported and polished

Ebay is your new best friend. Does it have an aftermarket ignition or the stock one?

It has stock igniton! But why is it running so bad? The guy said it has ten hours on new motor. I know for sure it has a new head on it and he claims it is a 440 stroker. but the spare piston he gave me is a std bore so I really dont know what it has inside there!?

Man I hate to hear that. To be honest though both my z's have been just as reliable as my buddies 400ex's. I had a procom ignition that would backfire then run crummy then stall and backfire some more. Maybe the cam timing was set wrong? It can only be a few things that could cause that I can think of, ignition timing, cam timing, or a valve isn't sealing right.
You should be able to get it straight pretty cheap if you just search for the parts and have patience.
Oh and the 440 in a z is not a stroker motor as he claims. It is a 4mm overbore to make it 434cc but we just call it 440. Z motors that are stroked come in a few flavors but not 440.
Im gonna send you a really helpful pm just remember its hush about that.

Thanks so much for the help. I forgot to mention I know that it has a Hot Rods Crank. I was messing around with the valves and found the ex. were super loose and the in. are super tight. I have been working on stuff for years but I havent messed with these newer 4-strokes it just has me baffled. I guess all the tolerances in these things are so close it doesnt take much to really affect them.

Get the valves adjusted right. Then give the carb a thorough cleaning.

Already cleaned the carb. It almost seems like it is out of time, but I checked the timing and everything seems to be in order. I hope it is just the valves. But I mean a backfire that blows the carb off!! WTF

Yeah it could do it. If you had zero clearance on one or both the intake valves and they never shut all the way. On the compression stroke I could see it popping it off. How's it coming today any better?

Take a pic of your cams when you think you have it lined up and post it on here. What did you get for clearance on your valves? For my hot cams I run .010 to .015mm on the intake and .020mm on the exhaust.

I havent got the shims yet. But I had to roll the motor almost quarter of a turn to even get feeler gauges in there. Not sure what shims to get. it has .290 in it. I got to looking closer and I dont think it even has hot cams in it. How can I tell? Starting to think that someone really made up a big story about this thing. I dont think it was the guy I got it from but maybe the person before him. Oh well like I said I dont have much in it. I traded an AR-15 for it

Stock cams have numbers with arrows on them for timing. New style hotcams have little dots that are punched into the cam sprockets, old style hotcams have painted on timing marks with no auto decompression mechanism on the exhaust cam. Hotcams are timed different from stock cams also. There are 14.5 pins between marks with hotcams and 15 with stock cams.
Here's a pic of stock cams timed this is with the line next to the T on the flywheel lined up in the inspection window. The the 3 mark pointing up on the intake, 2 mark pointing up for the exhaust and the T lined up on the flywheel. The other marks should be parallel to the head. My timing chain was stretched making it off slightly in this photo.

One of old school hotcams timed and with the line next to the T on the flywheel lined up in the inspection window. And a new timing chain.
