Default tapping in engine

Hey guy,
first time posting on the forum. I just picked up a 2004 ltz 400 this weekend. The bike looks like it has been raced by the previous owner. My question is the motor has a really loud tapping noise to it at idle and gets faster with idle. I just changed oil to specs. I heard these motors are loud but this one just dosent sound right. Here is a video i took. Thanks in advance.

Did you notice any glitter when you changed the oil? Because from that video it's not a really harsh tick more Of a knock to me, that would mean your crank bearing is shot. But if you didn't find any glitter more likely the cam chain then.

Kinda hard to isolate the sound from that position and the exhaust interference, but I would say its more than a timing chain. Pull your tensioner and check it, and hope it is just the chain.

When you say glitter do you mean metal shavings? I changed the oil and I took plug out and magnet had some shavings on it.

You're going to have metal glitter in your oil, most of it is your clutch. If you have chunks/shavings then i'd worry about the bottom end.

That actually sounds like your flywheel bolts backing out and taking out the stator, I know that sound pretty well. It happened to me and took out my stator.

It's tough to tell from the vid, but i'd put money on one (or a few) of your flywheel bolts shearing.

A lot of glitter or a little? And does your filter look like a 4 year olds hand in a craft shop? When mine looked like that my crank bearing was shot.

sounds like more than a timing chain tick or slapping, sounds like its knocking like the crank bearing, only way to find out is to tear it apart.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all of the replys i found a decent amount of shavings on the magnet. if this turn out to be a bearing gone bad how bad is it to ride it like it is? if the engine goes will it hurt anything else? i will inspect my oil filter tonite.

I wouldn't run it at all sounding like that. Until you find the problem don't even start it.
