Did you drain the oil from the crankcase and the oil tank?

I have a question.I have an 04 z400 and changed the oil I drained the tank and the crankcase and put about 2 1/2 quarts in the tank and it read fine and took it out for a 10min test run and when I took off the dipstick it was overflowing

You may have pulled the dipstick too quick. After running you need to let the bike set 3-5 mins to let the oil level equalize between the oil tank and engine.
