Default ltz 400 sputter and studders

My 2003 ltz 400 has been acting up. 1st gear goes fine 2nd is fine and then as soon as i switch to 3rd it starts to bog and sputter. It sounds the exact same as the rev limiter when im in reverse. I thought it was restricted gas flow so i cleaned the petcock and drained the bowl on the trail after it stalled out. It helpped a little but it still does that thing and it's starting to get the best of me. My second thought was maybe it is a timeing problem because it happens mostly around 3rd gear.

If you could give me your input or if this has happend to you i would really appreciate it. thanks!!

Timing shouldn't be affected by what gear you're in. The engine goes through the rpm range the same no matter what gear. If you still have the stock auto cam chain tensioner pull it and check just to be sure though. Maybe its out of adjustment which would indicate the chain is stretched and getting loose.

I'd start by pulling the bowl or even the whole carb off and cleaning/inspecting your jets. If you haven't changed anything else on the quad probably just needs a cleaning.

Yeah i'm about to pull the carb off and clean it all. It's completely stock. Probebly hasn't been cleaned in a while. I hope that works. Thanks

so i tore the carb apart. cleaned the whole things put it back together and it ran good for a bit, but just started acting up again. I emptied all my gas too and cleaned inside the tank and the petcock. ran the gas through a funnel with a screen and cleaned and oiled my air filter but it still is doing that. It only happens periodically.

any more ideas?
