I have a z400 already. I have currently been looking at the lt250r and tecate 4. It seems they always get pushed to the side by the trx250r. I have seen a few quadzilla/250r conversions, but what else is possible. I like the idea of a hybrid especially a four stroke motor in a 2 stroke frame.

Back about 7 years ago I had a 89 LT250r and did a little ice racing. One guy had a great oval quad with a built honda trx250r motor in a LT250r chassis, and another had a large dirt bike 4 stroke in the LT250r chassis. Anything is possible you just need to get the motor lined up correctly. The LT250r chassis handles great, just not alot of suspension travel. The 87 and later are a little better than 85-86 models.

i was really close to doing a hybrid with the ltr frame and an rmz250. i didnt go through with it because the 250's dont have the longevity on the race track because they are just being worked too hard. i have a lot of friends that race bikes, and i have seen too many stock 250s puke the rod out the cases. they all went up to 450's and havent had issues like that yet. they all run stock bikes too.

a 250 hybrid is fast and light though. there are a few at the neatv races.

Default 250r hybrid

I got a 87 LT250R rolling chassis and I'm planning on doing a Z400 motor in it. Does anyone have any input?

I don't see the point honestly for that conversion. the z400 has better front geometry and one of the rear upgrades to 91-92 lt250r is to use a z400 rear shock... z400's imo are a better roller than an lt250r plain and simple.

matter of fact, a big upgrade guys are doing to the lt250r is full front clip conversions, one of the main quadracer fanatics does yfz front clip conversions where he cuts off the frame of both and graphs the yfz front to the lt250r

I've seen a couple 400ex/z400 front end conversions and I'm trying to do it myself right now. one was narrowing the bottom a-arm mounts of the frame to z400/400ex type (lt250r is straight up and down width not narrower on the bottom) and the other was to move the upper a-arm mounts 1" or so out. both accomplish the same thing I'm actually wanting to see if 1" longer upper arms will be a bolt on conversion personally but welding will probably be cheaper lol

anyway, point being the newer bikes simply have much better front suspension geometry anyone who tells you otherwise is lying or doesn't know what they're talking about. there's a reason the trx250r frame/suspension geometry is so widely copied and suzuki left the lt250r frame only to copy the trx250r front geometry on the z400..

I would use that 87 roller for a zilla hybrid personally. the frame mods are noted in quadracerhq.com forum with pix and there's plenty of support there to help you get it done right. to put a z400 motor in the lt250r you're pretty much on your own.

I rode a friends LT500 at Glamis once.......scared the WooterWooterWooterWooter out of me. That's a whole lot of go for some pretty crappy handling......back in the day though I'm sure it was great.

someone started a build on that once, fell out tho

but he started in 08 and hasn't completed it as of last year. so I kinda doubt he'll get it done this year...

LTR450/500QZ Hybrid Project

this is the reason when people ask about lt250r or lt500r I send them to quadracerhq. that's where the majority of the QR guys hang alot of guys that are very into the quadracers there. some WICKED bikes on there as well! one guy from planet sand is selling a 250R with an H2 snowmobile motor in it for like $1500... probably can't be ridden besides in the dunes lol

i think the z/r conversion could work well depending on app. there is def. some weight savings to be had in it. my lt250r handled great on flattrack just didnt have the power to keep up. go for it and keep us updated. im sure it can be done with some patience and perseverance...good luck!!!!
