I have a 1985 LT250R & broke the upper chain guard bolt out of the case. The local dealer said the case is made from magnesium making it impossible to weld. Another dealer and the internet said the case is aluminum. Does anyone know for sure what material it is? Thanks for the help.

Im not familiar with that engine, but all the crank cases I have ever worked on were aluminium. Some times a cover will be mag, but I've never seen the main case made out of anything but aluminium.

thanks for the replies. Unfortunately helicoil won't work. When the bolt came out, it wasn't a clean break. There's about a one inch long hole in it. Just wanted to make sure it was aluminum before having someone weld it.
