I just got my quadzilla a few days ago and am pumped to own such an insane machine.... runs good, very hard starting when its cold tho but also today after fixing some minor things I took it out for about 20 min, just did some donuts and a little up and down the driveway since we have so much snow up here.... but when I put it away the coolant was boiling and pissing out of the overflow... I'm a pretty good mechanic but am not familiar with 2 stroke cooling systems and was hoping someone can help point me in the right direction???

I would do a compression check, and maybe get a pressure tester on that cooling system. Most automotive shops or dealers should have the pressure tester

Well a compression check to test the engine's condition, and also a pressure test for the cooling system.
If it would happen to have a leaky head gasket, it would cause low compression, hard starting, and overheating, by pushing combustion pressure (air pockets) into the cooling system. The cooling system pressure test is actually the better way to check for it. I like to warm the engine, shut it down, bleed off pressure, put the pressure tester on the radiator, then fire it and stab the throttle while watching the pressure gauge. If you see the pressure raise every time you hit the throttle, that is a good sign that your head gasket is leaking. However, this test can be tricky because as the engine warms, it will slowly build pressure as well. You should be able to tell the difference though.

Get a service manual for the z and it will tell you everything you need to know to check it. The best 25 dollars I have ever spent. You can get one online or pick one up at a dealer. Gl.

I think he ment zilla lol
I dont know what kind of compression those ran. It needs 90 to run, but if it only has 90, there's a problem somewhere. Honestly, if you can get a hold of a leak down tester, that would be much better. Not everyone has one of those. Any decent dealer or small engine repair shop SHOULD have one though. That presurizes the cylinder, and measures how much pressure leaks by the rings. Or if the head gasket is bad, it will push pressure into the cooling system. Ideal leak down is as low as possible, but its rare to see less than 2-5% 10% is average 15+ points to some problems, if it is beyond 20% Rebuild it no mater what. (That is all provided that it isn't blowing past the head gasket)

well i love this site but i would go try www.quadracerhq.com...that site is very good when it comes to the old quadracers...very informative and nothing but the zilla and its little brother.... my opinion to the problem is you should have atleast 130-160lbs compresion...make sure the rad is very clean and the water pump is working....just an fyi the zilla is very mean but also is very high maintanancene...needs rebuilt every 15-25 hrs atleast....and if its an 87 the head bolts need upgraded to the bigger size like the other years....good luck

ok thanks, well I spoke to the previous owner and he never did the top end so I'm going to just go ahead and do the top end and really hope that it is the head gasket, I figure either way the top end def needs to be done so even if after it still is overheating I guess I'll start looking at the water pump....

Post up some pics and share when you do it. I'd be interested in seeing more stuff about Zilla's around here.

Thanks guys, I have some pics on my phone just have to figure out how to get them on here from there. I ripped the engine out tonight, I didn't see any major bad spots in the head gasket but it certainly wasn't pretty. I did find out that the top end hasnt been touched in several years, about 4 years ago the previous owner took the head off to clean the carbon buildup in the head and that was all he could tell me, he doesn't know the last time it was rebuilt, I also checked the water pump impellar which seemed to be working fine, was in good visual condition and seemed to spin just fine. Just waiting to measure the piston and order my top end kit now.... I just hope this fixes my problem!!!
