Default Lt500 compression question?

Hey guys, some of you may have seen that I picked up a nice zilla the other day. The previous owner said that it lost compression, but once I got it home I screwed in the spark plug, and it seemed to have decent compression. I took it to Trinity racing today and they said that the compression is only 100. Is this low for this bike? Should I not try and ride it before I open up the top end and see whats going on in there? Thanks!

That is real low. Top for a top end build. Make sure you do a leak down test and jet it correctly after you get the top end done. The Zilla has alot of power to gain with the right upgrades

Ok. Thanks Dakota. So you think the top end is shot huh. Not just the rings or something easy? Should I not try and even start it like this?

Are you able to test the compression yourself? If so drop a slight bit of 2-stroke oil down the spark plug hole and gently kick it over a few times(with no spark plug). Then check compression agian, this is called a "wet compression test". If the number exceeds 100psi with the wet test thats an indication that your rings are shot. And doing rings in a 2-stroke is insanely easy! and realtivly cheap.

If your going to compression test it yourself, make sure to hold the throttle wide open and kick it till the gauge needle stops rising . Your best bet is to have a shop look at the cylinder to determine if it needs a bore or just a hone.

Yeah I took it to Trinity racing to get the compression tested. I thought the were a very reputable shop. I watched when they did the test. They didn't do a wet test. and he didn't touch the throttle at all. Could this have given me a false test? He screwed his compression tester in, and kicked it a few times and said it was at around 100

if the throttle is closed, the intake tract is under vacuum, so the cylinder will not completely fill with air, and there is much less air to compress which gives you a lower number. always compression test wide open.

That don't sound like the right way. I've done many on mine and it takes about 8-9 kicks for it to read it's highest. Having the throttle open let's it draw in the air alot easyer to compress it . Try it my way and post the reading.
