Default LT 80 dying after 5/10 mins

Iv recently bought a Lt 80, been stood a year. Had a bit of a play with getting it started the other day. Had to by pass the starter relay and after a bit it fired up. Took it up the street and it was spluttering. Bought a new plug and relay in today, put them in and it started first time. Took it out and it would only run on the choke, smokes loads, then started to die when you put full revs on after 10 minutes or so. Now it just dies when you rev it. Ticks over fine, without choke. It was running mint for 10 mins after new plug n relay fitted. Iv not yet had the carb off. Was just wondering if anyone had experienced this and could offer some help.

Cheers Ri.

take the carb apart and clean it, and cleaning it means using an appropriate tool to clear all orifices and passageways. spraying carb cleaner will do nothing but get dust off the outside. torch tip files or carb drills work fantastic. you dont want to use a tool that is bigger than the hole you are cleaning, you will throw off the jetting if you ream anything larger.

make sure you have proper flow coming from the petcock/fuel line. also make sure the vent on the gas cap is able to let air into the tank.

Also check the carburetor insulator (between the carb and the reed cage). These have a tendency to develop cracks, and allow additional air into the reed cage, causing the need to run with the choke on as you have mentioned.

Right. Cleaned all the carb out. Jets ect all clear. Seal between the carb/engine looks ok. Now it's running worse. Soon as I rev it it dies and splutters like mad and won't even pull me. Ticks over mint. It's like it's flooding or choking. It's really p***ing me off ha ha
