I’m guessing you have a worn clutch basket. The clutch plates get caught in “grooves” worn into the fingers of the clutch basket and doesn’t fully seat until you give it some throttle. If that’s the case, it will quickly burn out your clutch. I’d at least pull the side cover and watch what it does while operating the lever.
