I need help with my 2003 ltz 400 when I try to start her up the solenoid just repeatedly clicks and after so long it drains the battery I started with a multimeter At battery and got 12v so battery’s good the positive on the solenoid gets 12v but when I touch the negative on the solenoid my multimeter just beeps nonstop I’m a beginner and I just leaned how to use a multimeter but I know that I’m supposed to have the multimeter ground then touch positive end to the negative on solenoid and then press start button on 4 wheeler and take my reading but I can’t even get to that point because when I touch the multimeter positive to the solenoids negative it nonstop beeps can someone help me out any help is appreciated

You could need a new starter, mine just had the same issue and I had to replace the start and now it’s fine.
Ok, on your machine did you test battery, solenoid and starter with a multimeter to get down to the exact problem? I ask bc that is the really way to find the problem but my multimeter is automatic so when I touch the negative to ground and the positive to the solenoids negative I should be able to try to turn the machine over and it’ll give me a reading on multimeter but for me when I touch the positive to the negative on solenoid it just beeps why is this is it because I have a automatic multimeter so it’s jumping modes jumping to continuity testing instead of staying on dcv?

when I put the multimeter to the positive on solenoid it read 12v so the solenoid is getting good power from the battery but where I’m stuck is then when I test the wire going from the solenoid to the top of starter my multimeter just beeps. Ain’t I supposed to be getting a reading when I click the start button on machine I’m supposed to be getting 12v from the solenoid to the starter but it just beeps and since I have a automatic multimeter when it’s beeping it doesn’t take reading the whole screen goes blank and doesn’t take reading while beeping

Can you skip solnoid and put power direct to start, Jump box or jumper cables see if starter responds.

Make a quick jumper to go from on the of the bigger bolts to the other on the solenoid. if the starter reacts your starter should be good and will need to replace the solenoid. Or if your wanting to use your multimeter I would think you could put the positive lead on the cable going to the starter. And then when you press the start button should see voltage there.

I thought you already tried that, Jump solenoid first then as last resort try power direct to starter just in case its a bad cable.

Thank you for your help and lol you would think i already tried that I’m very young kid and very inexperienced I’m just trying to get into small engine repair for a side job I want to buy and fix projects and sell them for profit and this is my first big engine project all of my other projects were like fixing a non running lawn mower or a 80cc mini bike this is my first real big project and im learning so much im watching 2 vintage on YouTube and he’s taught me everything I know you think since I watch 2 vintage I would of known to jump the solenoid with screwdriver but It slipped my mind until 2vintage actually commented on my facebook post in his group and told me to jump solenoid

I jumped solenoid with a screwdriver and the starter clicked it sounded like maybe it got stuck but it at least clicked and moved over so it is indeed a bad solenoid crappy part is I just ordered the solenoid from eBay supposedly used from another 2003 ltz 400 the seller put in description it worked as intended. But when jumping the solenoid with a screwdriver with it continue to turn all the way over or is it supposed to just click the starter basically I’m asking when I jumped the solenoid and the starter only clicked is this good or is it supposed to do more then just click?

The starter should turn over if you have a good conection, If you hook right to started that should tell you. Does the Quad run if you pop start it? Motor isn't seized Right?

I have never seen the quad run since I bought it last year as a project the guy before me said he seen it run for a few seconds then it died but I don’t know how to hook directly up to the starter I’m supposed to go look at another project tomorrow a 2004 ltz 400 guy has it posted for 600$ non running says it just shut off on him and won’t start so if anything I can use the starter off of the other quad I’m possibly buying tmrw. And on my quad it’s possible there’s a bad connection I have a hard time getting to the top of starter with the carburetor and frame in the way

I would do like Joe mentioned. Throw it in gear and see if you can make the motor turn over. If you put it in second or third gear and have someone pull you is should turn the engine over. You need to make sure its not seized up.

Okay you guys are going to laugh but I’ve never push started anything I’m going to have to watch a YouTube video on how to do that I’m young and inexperienced I just bought this Suzuki ltz 400 because I am interested in fixing projects and sell them for profit. So if the engine is seized I will tear it down and try to fix but I never had nothing manual or nothing with a clutch before no motor toys growing up so I personally do not even know how to shift😂 sadly. Am in process of learning though I was on YouTube and this guy did a really good job explaining it so I kinda understand but I’ve never rode a manual and shifted through the gears before so I’m learning how to do that now and then I will have to learn how to push start……. I know embarrassing but I never had nothing like this or nothing with a manual transmission ever before thank you guys for alllll your help and sharing your knowledge with me and help me grow and improve at fixing these projects I appreciate it I will learn how to push start and I will do what i can to get her to run and I’ll post an update in few days

I can spin the engine manually with a socket from the Tdc hole so it’s not seized

You want to hook the Red to Red and Black to Black on the starter from the jump pac or jumper cables, and see if it spins, you can take starter off to do this if you like.
