Recently traded for this sport quad and it ran great just kept dieing, it definitely was needing a new battery and maybe a carb clean. So I cleaned the carb and got a new battery(12v short battery, model 9 meant for atv's, boats, ect.). After putting the battery in and and cleaning the carb, everything was fine but now when I start it the starter ensembely just spins. I took off the 3 8mm bolt cover for the starter assembly. All the gears are fine, it has a new starter. I checked the starter clutch by checking the gear that comes out of the fly wheel compartment and it only spins one way(counter clockwise). All the gears are in great condition and everything spins as it should with the cap off, but it's still not engaging the fly wheel. I'm not sure if this is something electric or mechanical. I don't see how it could be mechanical as I've only Changed the battery and cleaned the carb and it ran before I did the work. I don't have any experience with quads but I would love some in put to see what I may have missed, thanks!

But what if the one way bearing only goes one way and is spinning the starter clutch where the fly wheel is? Would you still think its the one way bearing? I took the top bolt off the fly wheel case and can see it moving. I have thought of the bolts shearing and that is still possible. Do you think it could be an electrical issue?

Did you confim that the gear on the starter is spinning? You say it is a new starter. Did you change it?
I didn't change it but yes, I've opened up the cap of the gear box on the side and all gears are spinning and in perfect condition. Including the gear going into the bottom end where the fly wheel and starter clutch are, also that gear only spindls one way.

The start clutch could be the issue, the starter puts a lot more force than you can by hand. If the starter is spinning then I would pull off the cover and start checking in there. Usually the start clutch would be noisy.
I just received the flywheel puller for the quad so I'm gonna pop it off to take a look.

Took the flywheel off and everything seems to be fine barrings are in tact and gears are great. Any suggestions? I'm probably gonna get a new fly wheel and starter clutch but, I don't see why the motor isn't turning when the starter is going.

No I didn't change it but it looks brand new and when I took off the cover for the starter gear assembly everything is working correctly. All the way down to the starter clutch gear is spinning but it's not turning the flywheel

Starters can run backwards, if they have the wrong pickup in them. That would cause your one way to free wheel. If the one way is turning the right way, it should be turning the engine over via gears. If one gear is not turning in that sequence, you have found the problem. if the flywheel is turning and not the engine, it has to be a sheared key.
I believe that is the issue because the starter spins the gears in the opposite direction of the oneway gear that only spins one way
