Cool Upgrade For An Lt-z 50 Mini

Not sure if this belongs here, but I figured it's not Z-400 related so here goes.

My son has a 2006 LT-Z 50 that he trail rides with me on my 400. It's a neat little bike but one of the drawbacks it has is that it REALLY lacks power. Even for a little kid's bike. The bike comes stock with a throttle limiter and clutch limiter, and after junior got better with it I took the clutch limiter out. Now the throttle limiter is backed way off, but the bike still has trouble with hilly areas or ruts. The biggest problem is the built in rev limiter. It never lets the engine spin long enough to build any speed or power. I called up my friend who is a mechanic at the dealer I bought the bikes at and asked if there was anything we could do to get a little more out of the mini. He scratched his head and said he hadn't really seen any performance parts for these, but he'd see what he could come up with. He called me up the next day and said he wanted to try something out. It seems that the CDI box off of one of the new Z-90 bikes is an exact fit for the 50 in every way. The wiring harness requires no mods and the box will physically fit perfect. He checked the wiring diagrams and the box is exactly the same except it has a rev limiter that is so high that this bike's clutch will never reach it. It took about 32 seconds to replace the box and then we tried it out.

The results are good. The bike isn't any faster, but because of the increased rev, you can gain a lot more speed before the hills where the old rev limiter would cut in. I had to reset the throttle screw because junior wasn't sure where to stop

. Heck, I even rode it and saw the difference.

So if you have one of the new 50's and are looking to increase performace, look at getting the 90 box. So far, so good.

Thanks for the help, Aaron. One of the best mechanics I know.

We've had one for a few months and your right that the power is very weak.
Our 3yr old is bored already !
I have searched and searched but cant find anything.
Do you know if this also gets around the safety start switch on the front brake lever as you cannot just short the switch out or the limiter stays on all the time ?

It did not bypass the e-brake switch. The switch still functions just like it did before.

If you do this mod, you will be impressed at how much more top end the quad has. No more grunt or harder launches, it just keeps spinning long after the stock CDI starts with the rev limiter. You know how if you hold the throttle to the bar the engine goes waaaa....wa.........waaaaaa......wa.wa.wa.....waaaaaa? Well, that's gone, it just continues to build RPM.

My friend advised me to keep the stock CDI on hand just in case of any warrantee claim.

My son also has a little suzuki 50 and i have a friend that own a performance shop for atv's and dirtbikes. A member on here told me that CT Racing makes a kit for these little quads that bumps up the horse power up pretty good so i asked my friend that and he told me that it does a great job. So I ordered one of there kits and he is going to put it on next week. The kit costs like 400 bucks but it doubles the power. I will post it up and let everyone know how it worked when it is finished.

That was me. It bumps the power like 40%. Don't forget the pilot jet has another larger jet under it. Take the bottom one out. Hopefully CT racing has jetting specs.

Thanks so much for the info on the cdi. I just recently bought one of these for my daughter and was very disappointed in the machine. I am going to take out the spacer this weekend but could not figure out where the rev limiter was. After a little research found out it was in the cdi.I do know that at thi time ctracing is not selling this part and was very pleased to find out the one off of the 90 works. thanks again
