I have only had my Z for a week and have only ran one tank of gas in it I can hear a knock in the back of the engine. Is this normal. I have not been hard on it AT ALL. It is not that loud but its there.
Yes I am running good gas. It's not spark knock. I have ran high comp. on race engines before. This knock is at the back of the gear box at idle. My crapter I mean rapter also had a little noise in the bottom end.
I live down the road from our local Susuki mechanic. He told me that all the DRZ motors make some noise. How long did you wait till you change the oil.
This motor makes so many new noises, A slip on pipe will surely cover most motor noises. 8)
Over head cams do make noise
Self adjusting cam chain makes noise
Being a dry sump motor also makes noise
Yeah, it ain't too much to be worried about. I know I was real paranoid when I first got it, but not now. I love this darn thing more all the time.

I was waiting for some of our group to catch up and I was listening for the knock some of you guys hear and it def. sounds like it is in the gearbox. If you put your Z in gear and let it idle then put it in neutral and let the clutch out you will hear a knock.
I get a knock at idle in gear, but i think it's gear lash.I changed my oil after
the first hour and had a bit of metal on the drainplug.I changed it at 5hrs
and had less metal and noise, getting ready to change it again and see.
