Might not be getting a signal from the flywheel, bad pickup or loose connection..

There are be 2 wires coming from the crank trigger to cdi. With the battery unhooked, check resistance. Red lead to Green wire, Black lead to Blue wire. Should be 350 to 670 ohms.
Voltage test, same Red to Green, Black to Blue. DC voltage crank engine with starter, should read 2.0 volts. They recommend a Fluke Model 73 Multimeter (p/n 0644-191) with Peak Voltage Reading Adapter (p/n 0644-307) for the peak voltage test.

My bad, thought we were talking Z400 here. I dont know the specs for the lt 80. It will also pick up a signal from the flywheel. There should be 3 wires for the charging circuit, and 2 of the trigger coil on an 80, I would think. dont know the colors or specs, but I expect it would be in the ball park of the 400.
