Timing off

I have a 2003 ltz 400 and I am trying to get it to tdc so I can take valve measurements for adjustments but when I line the timing marks up on the tdc hole the piston is at the bottom of its stroke, is there a simple fix for this or do I have to take the engine apart

If you are lining it up with the line beside the T, and the piston is at the bottom., something is off. If it runs, I would guess something happened to to flywheel. I would just take it to TDC with a stick in the spark plug hole and check the valves, if thats all your trying to do.. If it doesnt run, sheered flywheel key is a possibility.
iirc the "T" only lines up with top dead center every other rotation

I think you will find that it it lines up with tdc every rotation. The cams are at half speed, and are both closed, every other rotation.
